The Structures group of the department performs high-end cutting edge research on the various aspects of Aerospace structures. The Structures group has always had the legacy of having some of the best brains such as Prof. Joga Rao, Prof. A.K Rao, Prof. Durvasula, Prof. A V Krishnamury and Prof. B Dattaguru, who had made significant contributions to the growth of aerospace structures activity in the country. Built on the strong foundations laid down by these luminaries, the current structures faculty are world renowned and are working on some of the latest cutting edge research topics such as Structural Health Monitoring, Smart Structures, nano materials and structures, Aeroelasticity, computational intelligence and MEMS.

The group boasts itself for having one of the best Structural Health monitoring groups in the world, having many faculty working on both modeling and experiments. Many of the faculty in the structures group are crowned with various honors such as the fellow of Indian National academy of Engineering, ASME, Royal Aeronautical society etc. and are in Editorial Board of many leading International Journals. Some of the faculty members are Associate Editors of many leading Aerospace Journals such as AIAA, Smart materials and Structures etc. Faculty members of the group publish heavily in high impact journals and have elicited significant citations for their work. The faculty of the group has attracted significant amount of research funding from both India and abroad. In addition to DRDO, ISRO and DST, the group has attracted major research funding from abroad organizations such as Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, Office of Navel Research USA and AFOSR, USA. In the year 2000, the Aeronautical research and development Board (ARDB) established the ARDB Center of Excellence in Composite Structures Technology (ACECOST) for the performance of research in emerging areas in composite structures. Some of the facilities that group work on include the 3-D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer, Instron Fatigue Testing machines, Dynamic Mechanical Analyzers, Autoclave for Composite Manufacturing, Acoustic Emission test setups, water coupled Ultrasonics and X-ray tomography systems.
